The heart of a woman is not united; it is divided. While she is talking with one man, she looks lustfully at another and thinks fondly of a third in her heart.
जल्पन्ति सार्धमन्येन पश्यन्त्यन्यं सविभ्रमाः।
हृदये चिन्तयन्त्यन्यं न स्त्रीणामेकतो रतिः।।2।।
The fool (mudha) who fancies that a charming young lady loves him, becomes her slave and he dances like a shakuntal bird tied to a string.
यो मोहयन्मन्यते मूढो रत्तेयं मयि कामिनी।
स तस्य वशगो भूत्वा नृत्येत क्रीडा शकुन्तवत्।।3।।
Who is there who, having become rich, has not become proud? What licentious man has put an end to his calamities? What man in this world has not been overcome by a woman? Who is always loved by the king? Who is there who has not been overcome by the ravages of time? What beggar has attained glory? Who has become happy by contracting the vices of the wicked?
कोऽर्थान्प्राप्यन गर्वितो विषयिणः कस्यापदोऽस्तंगताः।
स्त्रीभिः कस्य न खण्डितं भुवि मनः को नाम राज्ञप्रियः।।
कः कालस्य न गोचरत्वमगमत् कोऽर्थों गतो गौरवम्।
को वा दुर्जनदुर्गुणेषु पतितः क्षेमेण यातः पथिः।।4।।
5. जब मनुष्य का बुरा समय आने से पहले, उसकी बुद्धि उसका साथ छोड़ देती है| इसको सिद्ध करने के लिए वह एक उदहारण देते हैं. सोने का हिरन कभी होता नहीं है और न ही किसी ने कभी सुना, लेकिन तब भी भगवान् राम सोने के हिरन को पकड़ने के लिए चले गए| क्योंकि वक्त बुरा आने वाला था और बुद्धि ने साथ देना छोड़ दिया|
the wisdom of a man deserts before the arrival of a bad time. Acharya illustrates, there are no golden dear spices in this world. Even if, Bhagwan Ram saw it and rush to catch him because hard time is about to come.
न निर्मिता केन न दृष्टपूर्वा न श्रूयते हेममयी कुरंगी।।
तथाऽपि तृष्णा रघुनन्दनस्य विनाशकाले विपरीतबुद्धिः।।5।।
A man attains greatness by his merits, not simply by occupying an exalted seat. Can we call a crow an eagle (garuda) simply because he sits on the top of a tall building.
न निर्मिता केन न दृष्टपूर्वा न श्रूयते हेममयी कुरंगी।।
तथाऽपि तृष्णा रघुनन्दनस्य विनाशकाले विपरीतबुद्धिः।।5।।
7. गुणों की ही सर्वत्र पूजा होती है, गुणी व्यक्ति का ही सभी सम्मान करते हैं चाहे उसके पास धन कम हो| चाणक्य कहते हैं, पूर्णिमा का चन्द्रमा पूर्ण होता है, सबसे ज्यादा रोशनी देता है, लेकिन उसकी कोई पूजा नहीं करता क्योंकि उसमें दाग होता है| लेकिन दूज के चन्द्रमा की सभी पूजा करते हैं क्योंकि उसमें कोई दाग नहीं होता|
a Man with good quality and virtue respected in society even if with less money. the full moon is not worshiped even if it emits good light and look beautiful because it has stains. But Moon of Douj is worshiped because it is clear and show no stains at all.
गुणाः सर्वत्र पूज्यन्ते न महत्योऽपि सम्पदः।
पूर्णेन्दु किं तथा वन्यो निष्कलंको यथा कुशः।।7।।
The man who is praised by others as great is regarded as worthy though he may be really void of all merit. But the man who sings his own praises lowers himself in the estimation of others though he should be Indra (the possessor of all excellences).
परमोक्तगुणो यस्तु निर्गुणोऽपि गुणी भवेत्।
इन्द्रोऽपि लघुतां याति स्वयं प्रख्यापितैर्गुणैः।।8।।
If good qualities should characterise a man of discrimination, the brilliance of his qualities will be recognised just as a gem, which is essentially bright, really shines when fixed in an ornament of gold.
परमोक्तगुणो यस्तु निर्गुणोऽपि गुणी भवेत्।
इन्द्रोऽपि लघुतां याति स्वयं प्रख्यापितैर्गुणैः।।8।।
Even one who by his qualities appears to be all knowing suffers without patronage; the gem, though precious, requires a gold setting.
गुणं सर्वत्र तुल्योऽपि सीदत्येको निराश्रयः।
अनर्थ्यमपि माणिक्यं हे माश्रयमपेक्षते।।10।।
I do not deserve that wealth which is to be attained by enduring much suffering, or by transgressing the rules of virtue, or by flattering an enemy.
अतिक्लेशेन ये चार्थाः धर्मस्यातिक्रमेण तु।
शत्रुणां प्रणिपातेन ते ह्यर्थाः न भवन्तु मे।।11।।
12. एक घर में बंद वधु (बहु) के समान घर की तिजोरी में रखा हुआ धन कभी किसी काम का नहीं है, उसी प्रकार एक मुर्ख व्यक्ति का धन भी दुष्ट और पापी लोग ही उपयोग करते हैं उसका भी कोई समाज में सही प्रयोग नहीं होता है, ऐसा धन भी व्यर्थ है|
money locked in safe, is of no use. similarly, the wealth of a foolish man is used by crooked and wicked, society is not benefited by it.
किं तया क्रियते लक्ष्म्या या वधूरिव केवला।
या तु वेश्यैव सामान्यपथिकैरपि भुज्यते।।12।।
Those who were not satiated with the enjoyment of wealth, food and women have all passed away; there are others now passing away who have likewise remained unsatiated; and in the future still others will pass away feeling themselves unsatiated.
धनेषु जीवितव्येषु स्त्रीषु चाहारकर्मषु।
अतृप्ता प्राणिनः सर्वे याता यास्यन्ति यान्ति च।।13।।
All charities and sacrifices (performed for fruitive gain) bring only temporary results, but gifts made to deserving persons and protection offered to all creatures shall never perish.
क्षीयन्ते सर्वदानानि यज्ञहोमबलि क्रियाः।
न क्षीयते पात्रदानं भयं सर्वदेहिनाम्।।14।।
A blade of grass is light, cotton is lighter, and the beggar is infinitely lighter still. Why then does not the wind carry him away? Because it fears that he may ask alms of him.
तृणं लघु तृणात्तूलं तूलादपि च याचकः।
वायुना किं न जीतोऽसौ मामयं याचयिष्यति।।15।।
It is better to die than to preserve this life by incurring disgrace. The loss of life causes but a moment’s grief, but disgrace brings grief every day of one’s life.
वरं वनं व्याघ्रजेन्द्रसेवितं, द्रुमालयं पक्वाफलाम्बुसेवनं।
तृणेषु शय्या शतजीर्णवल्कलं, न बन्धुमध्ये धनहीन जीवनम्।।16।।
All the creatures are pleased by loving words; and therefore we should address words that are pleasing to all, for there is no lack of sweet words.
प्रियवाक्यप्रदानेन सर्वे तुष्यन्ति मानवाः।
तस्मात् तदेव वक्तव्यं वचने का दरिद्रता।।17।।
There are two nectarine fruits hanging from the tree of this world: one is the hearing of sweet words (such as Krsna-katha) and the other, the society of saintly men.
संसार कटु वृक्षस्य द्वे फले ह्यमृतोपमे।
सुभाषितं च सुस्वादुः संगति सज्जने जने।।18।।
The good habits of charity, learning and austerity practised during many past lives continue to be cultivated in this birth by virtue of the link (yoga) of this present life to the previous ones.
जन्मजन्मनि चाभ्यस्तं दानमध्ययनं तपः।
तेनैवाभ्यासयोगेन देही वाऽभ्यस्यते।।19।।
One whose knowledge is confined to books and whose wealth is in the possession of others, can use neither his knowledge nor wealth when the need for them arises.
पुस्तकेषु च या विद्या परहस्तेषु च यद्धनम्।
उत्पन्नेषु च कार्येषु न सा विद्या न तद्धनम्।।20।।
